Wag! Walkers know West Village (W Village)
West Village is a neighborhood in the town of Maywood which is a suburb 10 miles west of downtown Chicago. The borders of the neighborhood are defined by Lake Street to the north, Madison Street to the south, 25th Avenue to the west, and 15th Avenue to the east. It is a mostly residential area with only a few small shops and businesses on the major streets. Either way, you should be able to find a fair few amenities to enjoy.
The weather in Maywood is similar to that of most of the Chicago area, but it doesn’t experience the same degree of cold, biting gusts coming off of Lake Michigan. Its winters are still very chilly, but the summer and springtime in Maywood can be beautiful and mild. If you do choose to walk in the winter, make sure you take the proper precautions to keep both you and your dog warm on particularly chilly days.
What is the terrain like in West Village (W Village)?
The terrain in West Village is extremely flat. You will not be dealing with any dramatic shifts in elevation or hills to speak of at all. West Village lies just north of the Seminary District, both of which have a mix of grittier street corners and pleasant suburban neighborhoods. Though the terrain is mild, Maywood does have a history with gangs and crime, so it is best to walk your dog during the daytime.
There won’t be much foot or street traffic in West Village except for the normal rush hour times. Roads like Madison and Lake Street will be busy at these times of day and there will be plenty of people walking down the sidewalk going to or from work and school. If you stick to the more residential sections of the neighborhood at rush hour, you and your dog will be able to enjoy less crowded roads and a quieter time together.
How many greenways are there in West Village (W Village)?
There are no parks or greenways within the borders of West Village, but there are a few options within short walking distance. Memorial Park, a small green space just 4 blocks east of West Village, has open fields, walking paths, and athletic courts for you and your dog to explore. This is the only actual park within the boundaries of the town of Maywood, but there are several other parks just a few blocks to the east and the west.
A short walk west down Washington Boulevard will lead you to Stevenson Park. This park is much larger than Memorial and it has a large indoor fitness facility that is frequently used by members of the Bellwood community, a neighborhood that borders Maywood on the west. Stevenson Park also has large open fields, athletic fields, and a small creek that runs along its eastern edge, making it a fantastic destination for dog walkers in the area.
