The weather for travel in this area is usually cooperative in summer with sunny weather and warm temperatures, although thunderstorms are always a possibility. You don't want to get caught in a torrential downpour or thunderstorm with your pup. Winters are cold and snowy and pedestrians traveling the area will need warm outerwear and footwear. Even your dog may benefit from a coat and booties!
Commercial corridors do not have a lot of landscaping, however, residential areas on the north side consist of low rise apartments and condominiums with beautifully landscaped grounds. Buildings have unique architecture specific to the period they were developed in, and along with huge shade trees, the area is beautiful and interesting for walking with your dog.
Austin Gardens is located near the downtown business district, tucked away in the residential district to the north. This woodland oasis has just over three and a half acres of green space. An environmental education center is located here as well as an outdoor ice rink. Residents can enjoy the park with their dog on a leash.
Scoville Park is home to the Horse Show Fountain, a war memorial, and an open area that hosts outdoor concerts in the summer. There is also a playground and tennis courts located in the park. A paved walking path allows access to the park's natural areas and is a shady greenway on a hot summer day.
Just outside the downtown area to the east is the Ridgeland Common Park which features a pool and recreation center. This landscaped property with pedestrian paths is another greenway destination for area residents with pets to enjoy trees and open lawns in Oak Park.
