Wag! Walkers know Near West Side
The Near West Side is a large, lively neighborhood located slightly northwest of the downtown area in Bloomington, Indiana. Its boundaries to the east and west are Rogers Street and Adams Street and its boundaries to the north and south are 11th Street and Kirkwood Avenue. The neighborhood is mostly residential with homes of many different colors and architectural styles that have a good amount of trees and green space all within walking distance of downtown.
Being located on the northern side of the Midwest, Bloomington still experiences a full range of seasonal weather, but it tends to have chillier lows with moderate highs. The warm months in the city can be great for walking with temperatures rarely exceeding 90 degrees. However, keep in mind that its winters have average lows in the mid-to-low-20s, so you'll want to take along some warm winter wear for you and your pup to remain comfortable throughout.
What is the terrain like in Near West Side?
Though many areas of Bloomington are quite flat, there are some small hills in the Near West Side neighborhood. Starting on Kirkland Avenue, the southern border street of the neighborhood, you will find yourself going up in elevation if you take any of the streets that branch off to the north. Most of the east-west streets in the neighborhood are flat, but the streets that go south to north have fairly steep hills at times, so it can add an extra workout to your walk if you and your dog explore this area.
Near West Side is likely to have some of the heaviest foot and street traffic in Bloomington because of its close proximity to downtown and its large amount of residents. The streets can often be narrow, especially in the less traveled sections of the neighborhood, and there is a lot of tree and bush cover anywhere you go.
How many greenways are there in Near West Side?
There is only one park or greenway within the neighborhood named Butler Park, but there are also several options nearby. Butler Park is located in the center of the neighborhood and it is 9 acres in size with a community garden and lots of open green space. It is an easy place to walk to from anywhere in the neighborhood and is one of the most popular parks for dog walking in Bloomington.
If you venture outside of the borders of Near West Side, you will still find plenty of parks and greenways to be explored. Building Trades Park is located just a few blocks south of the neighborhood and it is smaller in size than Butler Park but it still has plenty to offer! There is a quarter-mile loop trail that runs around its central green space, both of which are great places to take your pup to walk.
