Wag! Walkers know Florida Area

Florida Area is a residential neighborhood that is part of the Bywater District of New Orleans, Louisiana. Florida Area residents have about a 20-minute commute southwest to the New Orleans central business district. There are some local businesses that you can reach on foot if you travel south towards the river including a veterinarian, local eateries, shops, and other services. Florida Area has several churches and a community park situated within its boundaries that can be easily reached on foot.

New Orleans has warm to hot temperatures most of the year and cold weather does not hamper dog walkers from taking their pets out daily. Rain, especially in warmer months, may mean putting on a rain jacket and grabbing an umbrella. Summers can be hot and humid and you will want to take water for you and your pet to stay hydrated. Hurricanes and tropical storms, while not common, mean you and your dog should take shelter to avoid dangerous conditions.

What is the terrain like in Florida Area?

Florida Avenue is a residential community bounded by Florida Boulevard on the north, Mazant Street to the east, North Galvez Street to the south, and a railyard on the west side. Train tracks also border the community on the north side.

The terrain is Florida Avenue is flat and, at zero feet above sea level, is subject to flooding during heavy rains and storm systems off the gulf. Most streets have separate sidewalks for people and pets to walk on, but some streets do not. Traffic in the area is light as there are no main thoroughfares transecting the neighborhood. When you need to share the road with vehicles, walk facing oncoming traffic with your dog securely leashed.

Florida Area dwellings are single-family detached homes that are moderate in size and many are older. Some new buildings have been constructed since Hurricane Katrina, however, there are still many undeveloped, empty lots that have not been rebuilt.

How many greenways are there in Florida Area?

The Odile Davis Park is located in the Florida Area neighborhood and is easily accessible to residents and their canine companions while walking in the region. This community park has an open sports field, a pavilion, playground, and basketball court. There are no trees to provide shade and this park may be too exposed during hot weather for walking with your dog.

There is an off-leash dog park to the south, along the river. The Crescent Park Dog Run is fenced and your pup can play loose in the safe enclosure near the waterfront. This dog run is part of the larger Crescent Park which stretches along the Mississippi River and has a 1.4-mile hard surfaced walking trail along the waterfront which makes a great place for to trek with your furry friend. Your dog should remain leashed when not in the off-leash area and you should bring supplies to clean up after your pet.
