The French Quarter is a historic neighborhood located northeast of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana. This neighborhood is a popular destination for tourists and New Orleans residents with restaurants, hotels, bars, and nightlife, as well as historic landmarks. This is a highly walkable district with plenty of interesting destinations for dog walkers.
While strolling the entertainment district with your pup, you are welcome at many local eateries with your canine companion where dog-friendly patios are present. Establishments in the area that welcome your dog in their outdoor seating areas include Cafe Lafitte in Exile, La Divina Gelateria, Claire’s Pour House, Orleans Grapevine Wine Bar and Bistro, New Orleans Famous Beignets and Coffee, Channing Tatum's Saints and Sinners, Mississippi River Bottom, The Courtyard, American Sports Saloon, El Gato Negro, and Belle's Diner.
Warm weather throughout the year means you and your dog can enjoy daily walks even in winter when sub-freezing temperatures are rare and snow is even rarer!
Streets are narrow with low rise, usually two-story buildings, set close to the streets. Structures have ornate architectural and ironwork that makes an interesting backdrop for a stroll with your furry friend. There are sidewalks throughout the neighborhood which is flat and easy to traverse. Train tracks along the river should only be crossed at designated crossing spots. This region can be busy with tourists and traffic, so your dog should be used to the noise to be comfortable on daily walks in the area.
Several parks and a riverfront promenade are situated conveniently for dog walkers to enjoy with their pets. The Cabrini Playground is an open greenway surrounded by trees on the north side of the community. Jackson Square is a more structured green space with walking paths laid out in concentric circles.
The Woldenberg Park is a riverfront park with access to the riverfront promenade and trail which provides views of the Mississippi. A larger greenway, the Louis Armstrong Park, is situated on the north border. This great park has waterways throughout it, crossed by pedestrian bridges with walking trails threading through the beautiful landscape.
If you're looking for some off-leash fun, you can take your dog to the Duncan Plaza Dog Park which is a 20-minute walk to the west. This enclosed dog park has a double gate, is lighted, and has chairs for pet owners to rest and supervise their pups. It is open from 6:30AM to 9PM daily.
