Gentilly Woods is a neighborhood located on the northeast side of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is a 15-minute commute southwest to reach the New Orleans central business district. Residents of Gentilly Woods can reach a commercial corridor on the south boundary of their neighborhood and Highway 90 is lined with fast food eateries, large chain stores, and local restaurants and shops.
When walking with your dog in this New Orleans neighborhood, you and your pup do not have to contend with frigid weather. Winters are mild and snow is extremely rare, so a light jacket usually suffices. Rain is common in the area and rain gear for you and your pet will keep you both dry while strolling the region. Hot, humid weather in the summer can result in heat-related illnesses. Make sure you and your pet stay well hydrated, take shorter walks at cooler times of the day, and watch for signs of heat stress.
Gentilly Woods occupies .72 square miles and has an elevation of zero feet above sea level. Due to its low elevation and proximity to the canal, the area is subject to flooding during hurricanes and tropical storms. The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills to climb when walking with your canine companion.
The community is mostly residential with a single-story homes. There are empty lots in the region where rebuilding has not occurred after Hurricane Katrina. Some large trees are situated in Gentilly Woods, but the region has plenty of open areas which can increase exposure during sunny weather.
The Harris Playground is centrally located in Gentilly Woods next to the elementary school. This community park has a play structure, basketball courts, and a sports field with paved paths on the borders. Greenway waterfront trails can be reached with a short drive north to Pontchartrain Park or south to the Mississippi River and the large City Park with plenty of trails and amenities is located a 10-minute drive to the west.
