Wag! Walkers know Irish Channel
The Irish Channel is a mixed-use neighborhood located along the Mississippi River, southwest of the New Orleans central business district. This is a sub-district of the larger Central City-Garden District and about a 10-minute commute to central New Orleans. There is an eclectic mix of unique, locally owned shops and restaurants along Magazine Street on the north side of the Irish Channel and a larger shopping area with stores to the west. When strolling this area with your pup, you will find several local eateries that welcome your pooch on their patio. These include the Bull Dog, G.G. Dine-A-Rama, Red Dog Diner, The Bayou Burger and Sports Company, and Reginelli's Pizzeria.
New Orleans boasts warm weather for most of the year that is amenable for dog walkers and their pets. Winters are relatively mild with only a few days reaching below the freezing mark. Summer is hot and humid and you may need to adjust the time of day you take your dog out to avoid the heat.
What is the terrain like in Irish Channel?
The Irish Channel is bordered by the Mississippi River on the south side, Magazine Street on the north side, Jackson Avenue to the east, and Napoleon Avenue on the west. The district has an elevation of seven feet above sea level and comprises 0.83 square miles. There are wharves along the river with shipping and light industrial activity on the riverfront.
Train tracks run along the road south of this channel and should only be crossed at designated pedestrian crossings. Homes are modest in size and closely set with landscaping and yards to the rear so street fronts are not well shaded. Although dwellings are not large, they exhibit vintage character and are attractive and charming.
Streets in the region are narrow, but they do have separate pedestrian sidewalks along them, so you and your pet don't have to share the road with local traffic. The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills to climb while walking with your pet.
How many greenways are there in Irish Channel?
Clay Square is a centrally located greenway with open and treed areas. There are recreational facilities here including basketball courts and play structures and part of the park is elevated and accessible by steps.
Boettner Park is located a short distance to the east and is easily accessible on foot. This park has some open lawns and trees with a paved walking path running through it. When visiting with your dog, ensure your pup is on a leash.
Wisner Dog Park is situated to the west. This is an enclosed off-leash dog park, but does not have separate areas for large and small dogs or a double-gated entry system. There is a water supply and waste disposal facilities, however, you should bring your own baggies and water in case the park supplies are not available. The park can be a bit muddy after a rain, so be aware that your pup can return home with muddy paws, depending on conditions.
