Hankering to check out one of Hawaii's hidden treasures? Grab Fido's leash and head out on a trip to Kaunala Beach. This pawrifically beautiful beach is small on size, but big on personality. An area renowned for its excellent surfing for advanced aficionados of the sport, Kaunala Beach has often been featured in the pages of the well-known Surfer Magazine. It is also known as Velzyland to the locals.Â
This oceanside haven is not easy to find, however, being tucked away behind the private gated community known as Sunset Colony. You must go through the Colony and down an access road to reach this pawsitively awesome beach. Though many people feel uncomfortable going through the private property, it is permitted, and the beach itself is pawblic. Your pooch may freely join you, but there are two things required of them at this seaside retreat: they must stay on a leash at all times, and are only allowed below the high tideline on the oceanside for their own safety, which is marked by seaweed or debris.
Travelling to the beach requires navigating some steep terrain. The sandy shores themselves are shaped like 1/4 of a crescent of white sand. If you fancy a swim, you and pup can dive right in! The water is pawsitively awesome here!Â
The one down side to Kaunala Beach is there is very little pawrking. You will find some outside the Sunset Colony. There are no on-site amenities, so please bring drinking water and cleanup bags along with you.Â
If the warm Hawaiian breeze is calling your name, bring Fido and the fam on an adventure to find Kaunala Beach. You'll have a barking great time at a beach that is one of Hawaii's best kept secrets!Â
