Punaluu Beach is a unique beach that’s famous for its black sand! This sand is made out of small fragments of lava, giving it its pitch-black color. Pups are welcome to join you on this beautiful beach anywhere on-leash!
Punaluu Beach has a large parking lot that typically has plenty of spaces. There’s also a restroom and an outdoor shower facility you can use to clean up your pup. Plus, if you or your dog get thirsty, drinking water is also available at the beach.
If you and your dog enjoy swimming, you can go for a dip in the bay at Punaluu Beach. Just be careful because the current can be strong at times. While you’re swimming, you may notice that the water is two different temperatures. This is because there’s an underwater freshwater spring in Punaluu Bay. This spring is most likely where the beach got its name since ‘punaluu’ means either ‘spring dived for’ or ‘coral dived for’ in the Hawaiian language.
After you’re finished swimming, you and your dog can go for a fun stroll on the black sand together. You can also relax underneath the beach’s palm trees. If you get hungry, Punaluu Beach has a picnic area that offers a great view of the bay. Bring lots of water too!
Punaluu Beach is also famous for its large population of green turtles and endangered Hawksbill turtles. These turtles often lounge around on the beach, basking in the sun. Be sure to keep your distance from these gentle creatures.
Punaluu Beach is a pawpular beach that’s perfect for anyone who wants to experience one of Hawaii’s unique black sand beaches. Be sure to bring some doggy bags so you can clean up after your pup while you’re out at the beach, and have a great time swimming and exploring here!
