Arrive at Shaw Island with your furry friend by ferry. The island has an area of only 7.7 square miles. Open year-round with a population of only 165, there is only one general store. The Shaw General Store is located at the ferry landing and is open May through Labor Day. No other stores or visitor services are available. If you are going during the winter, be sure to pack drinking water for you and your pet as none is available. Pack snacks for both of you!Â
If you are looking to stay overnight, there are campsites to pick from for a small fee. These sites are on a first come basis unless a special event, such as the annual Round Show Row, is taking place. Be sure to check their website to make sure before you go. RVs and large vehicles are discouraged due to the small size of Shaw Island. If you aren't into camping, Lopez and Orcas Islands are nearby and offer many dog-friendly accommodations.Â
The weather on Shaw Island is beautiful with an average of 247 days of sunshine, staying a cool 70° in the summer and 40° in the winter. Enjoy a walk along the Indian Cove with a view of the water and the cliffs. Relax at a campsite and keep an eye out for both local wildlife and sea life. Enjoy watching turkeys, rabbits, deer, foxes, raccoon, seals and otters at a distance to not disturb them. At low tide explore the exposed hard-packed mud. The shallow waters are warm during summer making it comfortable for swimming or wading.Â
Fully enjoy an escape from the world with your pet in this cool, quiet gem. Walk along the beach, camp beneath the stars, enjoy the weather year round, and relax. You're on island time. Life will wait for you back home. Right now, just enjoy and relax!Â
