If you think exploring 400 acres of State park on the shores of Lake Michigan sounds pretty darn good, you'll love this delightful waterfront park. Located five miles south of the city of South Haven, Van Buren State Park Beach gives dogs and their humans a chance to take a relaxing stroll along the sand, take in some spectacular views, and maybe even dip their toes in the water.
A state park since 1965, this popular destination for tourists and locals alike features high dune formations, woodland hiking trails, a large 220-site campground and some wonderful picnic spots. However, you won't be surprised to find that the most fun in Van Buren State Park can be found down on the beach.
Boasting one mile of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline, this beach is always a popular swimming spot for families. It's also a grrr-eat spot to visit with your dog, as our four-legged fur babies are welcome on-leash in most areas of the park. With heaps of wide-open sand to explore, calm waters, and plenty of other natural scenery throughout the rest of the park, you and your dog will have a wonderful time as you simply follow your noses to find the next adventure.
Dogs are welcome in the designated doggy area at the southern end of the beach, but they're not allowed in the buoyed swim area. Your pet will need to stay on a six-foot leash at all times and should never be left unattended. Taking special care to clean up after your dog is also a must.
While the beach can get crowded during peak periods, it's still well worth a visit all year round. So if you're hunting for a paw-some dog-friendly beach that's within a few hours' drive of Chicago, this is one waterfront wonderland you should definitely check out.
