Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

You'll have your pick of seven campgrounds at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. This puptacular park stretches for 152 miles along the Arkansas River, where you can enjoy fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, and more. Fall asleep to the rushing waters and wake up to the majestic sight of the Sangre de Cristo and Saguache Mountains. Facilities accommodate six people per site. The maximum allowable length of your vehicle varies by location. Hook-ups and potable water are not available at any of the campgrounds.

The campgrounds, except for the Five Points facility, sit by the river and have access points for rafts and kayaks to launch into the water and ride the rapids. This area also attracts anglers hoping to catch rainbow or brown trout. Rent a bike or ATV and explore the trails. Two popular routes in the Salida area are the Midland Trail and the Rainbow Trail. Follow an old railroad or take a path that offers scenic mountain and river views. For hiking, check out the Hayden Meadows Trail. Walk across bridges and boardwalks in a wetland area. Back at camp, relax at the table or gather around the fire grill and recount the events of your day.

This recreational area is a furrific place to come with Fido. The park rules require that your fur-baby stay on-leash and under control. Take them with you to keep you company when you explore the area's trails. Use waste bags to scoop your pup's poop and throw it away.

Camping in the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a pawtastic way to spend time with your pooch and some good friends. You'll have a range of recreational activities to enjoy in the park. There are rentals for boats, bikes, and more here. Practice bear safety by securing any scented items in locked containers. Effective January 2019, you'll have to make reservations at least three days before your arrival. Rates will also increase from $18 to $28 in 2019.
