Covering more than 500 acres on the banks of the Wisconsin River, Council Grounds State Park is a favorite destination for water enthusiasts. From fishing, boating, and swimming to a host of winter activities, it offers a long list of recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The best part of all, however, is that your dog is welcome to join you while you experience everything this beautiful park has to offer.
A dam on the Wisconsin River at Council Grounds State Park forms Lake Alexander. The lake is a popular spot for boating and water skiing, and you'll find a boat landing near the accessible fishing pier and beach. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent in season, while anglers can try their luck catching northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, and many other species.
If you're looking to escape the heat, there's a 217-foot sandy beach ideal for swimming mid-June through mid-August. Alternatively, there's ample space on the sand to just lie back and catch a bit of sun.
Finally, if you visit during the winter months, backcountry cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also available.
The Council Grounds State Park family campground sits in a scenic, heavily wooded location. There are 55 campsites, 19 of which have electricity, and each site features a table and its own fire ring.
Park admission is $8 for vehicles with Wisconsin plates, or $11 for vehicles from out of state. Camping costs vary depending on the type of site you select.
Dogs are welcome in Council Grounds State Park but must be leashed and controlled at all times. You'll also need to take care to properly dispose of your dog's waste whenever required.
Council Grounds State Park is the pawfect location for anyone who enjoys water-based activities, or anyone who simply loves getting away from the rest of the world. It's a pretty park in a beautiful location, and offers a camping experience you and your dog will love.
