If you want to explore the beautiful wilderness of northern New Mexico, and if you want to do it with your dog by your side, you'll love visiting Carson Lake Campground. Located in Carson National Forest, near Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla, this pet-friendly campground offers a host of recreational activities as well as a chance to get away from the rest of the world.
The campground sits on the shores of Hopewell Lake, a small man-made lake at an elevation of 9,500 feet. This 14-acre lake is ideal for canoeing and is also home to rainbow and brook trout to keep anglers entertained.
The lake is set amid a pretty forest of aspen and conifer, which not only offers a scenic backdrop but provides shade for the campground. There are also several trails that leave from the campground and give hikers and horseback riders a chance to explore the surrounding terrain.
When you're ready to set up camp for the night, there are 31 sites available. Drinking water and vault toilets are provided, while two campsites feature a horse corral and water trough. A standard non-electric campsite will set you back $16 a night.
Happily, dogs are welcome to join you in the campground, but please note that you'll need to keep your pet on a leash and under control. As always, make sure you clean up after your dog whenever necessary.
One other point worth noting: there's no cell service in the campground, so you'll need to be happy to be cut off from the rest of the world during your stay.
But if that doesn't bother you, there's nothing to stop you enjoying a pet-friendly getaway at Hopewell Lake Campground. There's plenty to see and do in this beautiful part of New Mexico, so make sure you leave enough time to experience it all.
