Hurricane Lake South Campground is a public campground situated in the Blackwater River State Forest, northeast of Pensacola, Florida. The first-come-first-served campground is located on the south side of the 318-acre Hurricane Lake. It offers both primitive campsites with no electricity or water and standard camper hookups.
The cozy campground accommodates tents and pop-up campers. It's well-maintained, and the hosts are said to be informative and friendly. There are approximately 18 campsites, and each one has its own fire ring and picnic table. Most of the sites are very spacious and offer great views. However, it is the central ones that have the most scenic views of the lake.
The campground is also equipped with water faucets, restrooms with flushing toilets, and showers. Picnic tables, benches, and a dump station are all available on-site as well. There is a boat ramp too, which enables the camp’s patrons to get easy access to the lake for fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. Plus, there are several places nearby where you can rent out canoes, such as the Blackwater Canoe Rental, Bob’s Canoes, or Adventures Unlimited, to name a few. If you prefer staying dry on land, there are numerous trails that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and sightseeing, including the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Other must-visits include the Armament Museum, the National Naval Aviation Museum, the Navarre Beach, and the Okaloosa Island Pier.
The Hurricane Lake South Campground is a popular destination for camping during the weekends, with few sites being available on short notice. Plan ahead and call in a day earlier to inquire about the availability of sites before hitting the road.
Although the campground is dog-friendly, canines must remain under strict owner supervision throughout their visit. Please pack plenty of dog waste bags and clean up after your furry friend, even outside of the camp’s grounds. Fees start at $9 per night, and there is no fee for day use.
