Located in Deschutes National Forest, Little Crater is a pawesome campground with tons of great activities for you and your pup! This campground sits on Paulina Lake, a lake that’s located in a collapsed crater. The campground has 49 lakeside campsites that are perfect for tents or RVs — just be aware that there are no electric hookups available. The nightly rate for this fun-filled campground is $18.
If you and your pup enjoy hiking together, Little Crater is a good choice for you. There are tons of fun trails near the campground, including the Little Crater Trail. This 1.8-mile loop trail takes you through a lovely woodland area, and it provides great views of Paulina Peak and the Big Obsidian Flow. As you’re walking, you may get to see some of Deschutes National Forest’s native wildlife, including porcupine, deer, and bighorn sheep.
Little Crater Campground is also just down the road from the Big Obsidian Flow Trail. This mile-long tail takes you past the 1,300-year-old Big Obsidian Lava Flow. As you’re walking past the obsidian and pumice flow, you’ll see interpretive signs that discuss the flow’s unique geology.
Little Crater is also a furrific option for boaters. If you’re bringing a boat, there’s a boat ramp available in the campground. You can also go kayaking or canoeing in Paulina Lake. Keep in mind that you'll need to obtain a recreation pass to use the boat launch. Many anglers also enjoy fishing in Paulina Lake — the lake is home to a wide variety of freshwater fish, including Kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and brown trout.
At the end of the day, you and your pup can relax at your campsite and enjoy views of the lake. Each campsite comes with its own fire ring with a grill, which you can use to cook up dinner for you and your furry best friend.
