Go for a journey way above sea level with your canine compadre into the White River National Forest, not far from Breckenridge, Colorado. It is here that you can find a very special kind of outdoor playground -- one that is just as much about how high up it goes as how big it is. At Lowry Campground, you'll find yourself right beside some of the most beautiful (and challenging) terrain that Colorado has to offer.
There are 27 campsites at this facility, most of which provide electric hookups. Three of the sites can only hold tents, but the rest will have no problem fitting rigs up to 32 feet in length. Each lot comes with its own picnic table and fire ring, and you can purchase wood to burn right at the camp. Basic sites cost $21.53 per night, while sites with hookups go for $26.53. No matter what type of site you have, expect to pay an extra $2 per night if you happen to visit on a holiday!
Get ready to plan your days out, because you're going to have to make an itinerary to hit all of the amazing spots that surround the campground. There are 8 different wilderness areas here, including Eagles Nest Wilderness, where you and Fido can go for the hike of a lifetime! On the days where you need a rest, relax beside the water, on the water -- but not in it. Lake Dillon does not allow any type of body contact with the water (which includes swimming and water sports). You can, however, cast lines out to your heart's content for a try at catching one of the many species of trout that live here.
Doggos are welcome in most parts of the giant White River National Forest, and while you may want to keep your woofer leashed so that they do not disturb other campers, out on the trails no lead is necessary. Just make sure your pooch has good recall skills and do your best to clean up after them even when you're out in the wilderness. Remember, there are bears here, so disposing of pet waste properly and storing food hidden in your vehicle are both musts.
