In Missouri Headwaters State Park, the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers merge together to form the 2,300-mile Missouri River. This geographically and historically significant corner of Montana is well worth visiting, especially if you're planning a pet-friendly camping vacation with your pooch.
Located at an elevation of 4,045 feet and just to the east of Three Forks, this beautiful park offers a number of memorable activities and attractions. Lewis and Clark stayed here on their famous expedition back in 1805, and this is also the spot where the legendary Sacajawea was captured as a child.
The purpose of the 532-acre park is to protect and preserve the region's abundant wildlife, native vegetation, and undeniably spectacular beauty. It features several short hiking trails, outdoor interpretive signs, and picnic spots.
If you're planning on staying the night, the Missouri Headwaters State Park campground is home to 17 campsites and tipi rentals. The campground is pet-friendly and offers plenty of amenities, but make sure you're aware that there are no showers available.
When visiting any Montana state park with your dog, please note that, from April 15th through September 15th, all pets must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet long, unless signs in the park indicate otherwise. Pets must also be leashed in the campground, and you must keep your dog under control at all times. As always, you'll have to make sure that you dispose of any waste produced by your canine companion.
Missouri Headwaters State Park takes in some truly iconic terrain and scenery. Whether you're an avid wildlife watcher, a history buff, or just someone who loves spending time in the great outdoors, you'll find plenty here to entertain, intrigue, and excite. If you're planning a pet-friendly camping vacation in Montana, this park is the pawfect destination!
