Those seeking peace and tranquility should look no further than Pinon Flats Campground in Mosca, Colorado. This picturesque campground lies within Sand Dunes National Park, a whopping 35 miles away from the honking horns and flashing lights of the nearest city. The scenery could double as a backdrop for Arabian Nights, with its rolling sand dunes, open skies, and majestic sunrises.
Pinon Flats welcomes tent and RV campers (and their canines), though you won't find hookups for electricity here. The campground has a few basic essentials -- flushing toilets, a dishwashing sink, and campfire rings -- but these are not the reason people flock to these breathtaking grounds. No, you won't find a luxury spa experience, but you will find some of the most beautiful scenery in all of America. Daily rates are a flat $20 for both RVers and primitive campers, with a max of two people and two vehicles at each pad (though not all sites can fit two vehicles).
The sand dunes are the tallest in the country making them a favorite for photographers (and kiddos who want to go sledding in the summer). The park doesn't close, so if the hankering to hike the dunes strikes at midnight, you can!
Planning to bring Spot along? Make sure you keep them leashed and picked up after. Secure all foods (kibble included!) in bear-proof containers so as not to lure unwanted guests to your site!
Reservations are hard to come by from May to June when the creek levels are at their highest. If you plan to come during this time, make sure you reserve your stay about six months out to secure your spot. During these times, expect lots of traffic and packed parking lots for this campground as well as those nearby. Want to beat the crowds? Plan to set up camp on a weekday! You don't want to miss this!
