Planning a Fido-friendly outdoor getaway in Colorado’s Routt National Forest? Consider pitching your tent at Seedhouse Campground! Like most US Forest Service campgrounds in the area, facilities at Seedhouse are a little rustic. You won’t find any showers, electricity, or RV hookups.
That being said, if you and your buddy are willing to "ruff" it a bit, you might find that Seedhouse’s location is worth sacrificing some creature comforts! You’re sure to feel your appreciation of the area’s natural wonder grow as you as you take in the mountain views, and you’ll be treated to the sound of the burbling Middle Fork of the Elk River as you drift off to sleep.Â
Unfortunately, Seedhouse does lack tree cover -- the pine beetle epidemic has taken its toll, and many of the area’s pines have had to be removed. You might want to bring a shade structure if you’re visiting in the height of summer. Although 15 of the 24 sites at Seedhouse are set aside for walk-ins, it’s still a good idea to make a reservation. There’s no entrance fee to the area, and sites start at only $12.
The main draw of Seedhouse is its proximity to all sorts of furrific recreation options! The stunningly beautiful Mt. Zirkel Wilderness is just a bone’s throw away from camp and boasts a whole host of trails for you and your pooch to sniff and explore. Most of the routes are of moderate difficulty and run through wildflower-studded wooded wonderland and past crystal-clear lakes. Careful, though -- most of the trails aren’t well marked, so be sure to look up a map before you go! Not only that, but the Continental Divide Scenic Trail is easily accessible from camp via a nearby feeder trail. Keen anglers will be glad to know that the Elk River provides plenty of opportunities for trout fishing, and you can cook your catch at one of the grills provided with each site.
Wifi isn’t available at Seedhouse, and cellular coverage varies from network to network. Fires are permitted, and you’ll find drinking water available on-site. One more thing -- Seedhouse is deep in bear country. Be sure to keep all food locked up tight! Remember to bring waste bags for your doggo, and have a pawesome trip!
