West Thompson Lake Campground is one of Connecticut’s best campgrounds. It sits beside its namesake lake, giving campers access to lots of fun activities. The surrounding forest of pine, oak, and hickory provides a pleasant backdrop for the campground — you’ll definitely want to take lots of pictures of the beautiful scenery. The campground has lots of other outstanding features as well, like its well-kept facilities. One of its best features is that it is dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch along to keep you company!
The campground has a few different kinds of sites you can choose from. Eleven of the sites have electric and water hookups, and just as many have no hookups. There are also two Adirondack shelters available. The nightly fees for the sites are $15, $20, and $30. The campsite has top-notch amenities to ensure your stay is a pleasant one. You can find an amphitheater, a playground, a basketball court, showers, and interpretive trails on the premises.
One of the campground’s coolest features is that it is next to an 18-hole public disc golf course! The course is free and provides great views of the lake. For more activities, you can head to the lake. There, you’ll find boating, canoeing, and fishing opportunities. There's also a boat ramp near the campground. Paddlers can explore the Quinebaug River Water Trail, which takes about three hours to complete.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when you’re planning your trip to West Thompson Lake Campground. First, note that waterfront sites are not available. Also, you cannot swim at West Thompson Lake, but there is a state park close by where you are allowed to swim. If you plan on boating at the lake, please respect the 5-mph speed limit. There is no alcohol allowed on the premises. Finally, remember to keep your dog leashed at all times.
