Burr Oak State Park is made up of 2,593-acres of land and 664-acres of water that is the Burr Oak Lake. The park is located in southeast Ohio, near the city of Athens, the county seat of Athens County, Ohio. To get to the park, just travel 17 miles north of Athens. The park’s central feature is the Burr Oak Lake that was created in 1950 after the construction of the Tom Jenkins Dam which was a multi-purpose flood control project that was constructed by the Corps of Engineers. The park was soon after established in 1952.
The topography of the park is mostly made up of hollows and forested ridges that are found at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Surrounding the park are plenty of valley farms and wooded hills that give the area a rustic country charm. Additionally, there is plenty of woodland wildlife at the park including white-tailed deer, and ruffed grouse. Burr Oak State Park is one of Ohio's resort parks offering plenty of accommodation choices including campgrounds, lodges, and cabins that offer a choice of both primitive settings and modern conveniences depending on what you prefer.
Other amenities that you can find at the park include over 100 campsites, 60-room lodge, 30 cottages, food concession, picnic shelters and picnic areas, restaurant, nature center playground, flush toilets, showers, hiking trails, swimming beach, marina, boat ramps, and a lot more. These facilities provide an opportunity for several activities including camping, hunting and fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, ice fishing, ice skating, and sledding.
Furthermore, if you choose to bring your dog to the park, you can rest assured that you will have plenty of opportunities to have some fun and relaxation with your pooch. In addition to the limit of two pets per campsite rule in all Ohio State parks, Burr Oak State Park offers a lot more choices than other Ohio parks since you can stay with your pooch in one of the many pet-friendly cabins, yurts, or lodge rentals. That said, you will still need to observe all other standard Ohio State park rules including keeping your dog on a leash not more than 6 feet long.
