Mitchell Park Off Leash Dog Area

Brookfield, Wisconsin is home to over 2,000 acres of outdoor recreational spaces, featuring just about any kind of activity that you could be seeking. This includes places to take your dog for off-leash fun, as is the case in Mitchell Park! This 405-acre park is one of the area’s largest parks, and it features a 14-acre off-leash dog play area adjacent to the park’s entrance off of River Road. 

Most of the Brookfield area features natural wetlands that are sustained by Lake Michigan, and Mitchell Park keeps this terrain intact through preservation. The Fox River runs along the opposite side of Mitchell Road as the dog park, which is only partially enclosed. Many owners take issue with the fact that the park is not fully enclosed, citing the danger of dogs escaping onto the street or crossing over natural ice bridges during the wintertime. 

Most running hazards can be avoided by ensuring that your dog responds well to your voice control. If you keep your dog close to you then you can enjoy being outdoors in the shade while your dog runs along the trails or takes a quick dive in the creek. Mitchell Park is one of several local parks run by the Brookfield Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. 

City ordinances do not allow dogs to play in undesignated grassy areas, which includes the Mitchell Park Off-Leash Dog Area. You will need to keep your dog on a leash and on paved roads or parking lots until you get to the off-leash area. The Mitchell Park Off-Leash Dog Area offers restrooms, but no drinking water or poop bags, so you will need to carry in all the essential gear. 

If you and your four-footed buddy stray from the well-worn pathways, be aware that your dog might encounter some of the area’s wildlife or poisonous plants. The Brookfield residents who visit the park all agree that the Mitchell Park Off-Leash Dog Area is an amazing place to take their dogs for walks, and if you find yourself visiting the area, you will probably come to agree!
