Mohican State Park

Mohican State Park comprises a total area of 1,110 acres of land in Ashland County, Ohio. The park is located about five miles southwest of downtown Loudonville which is in the middle of the state. The address to the park is 3116 State Route 3, Loudonville, Ohio 44842.

Mohican State Park also sits right on the southern shore of Pleasant Hill Lake and is surrounded by the Mohican-Memorial State Forest that begirds a total area of 4,525 acres. A tributary of the Mohican River called the Clear Fork weaves through the park and has carved narrow gorges before joining another principal tributary of the river called the Black Fork. The park hosts a wide variety of plant and animal species including the venomous copperhead, birds, skunk, raccoon, white-tail deer, red fox, black rat snake, box turtle, and opossum.

The Mohican State Park was originally called the Clear Fork State Park when it was originally established in 1949. The name change was to prevent confusion between the park and the similarly named Clear Fork Reservoir in Mansfield, Ohio. One special feature of the park is the Wolf Creek/Pine Run Grist Mill that was originally created in 1831 in Loudonville but was later dismantled and moved into the park in 1971. Today the mill is operated as a working museum.

Besides the historic interest and the natural beauty at the Mohican State Park, you can also enjoy several activities including nature programs, hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, biking, and camping. Some of the amenities to facilitate these activities include cottages, boat rentals, group camp, bike and hiking trails, picnic areas and picnic shelters, swimming pool, game courts, lodges, campsites, restaurant, and meeting rooms.

If you have a dog, you can bring them to the park at no extra cost. Some of the park rules that you must follow with regard to your dog include the following. You must keep your dog on a leash no longer than six feet long and you must avoid areas of the park that are not designated as pet-friendly areas. That said, unlike most other Ohio State Parks, the Mohican State Park has additional pet/dog-friendly facilities including lodges and cabins.
