Found on the southwestern edge of West Virginia, Moncove Lake State Park is a peaceful, scenic location excellent for families looking to have an outdoor experience. Locals love throwing parties here, and sports enthusiasts are captivated by the multitude of hunting and fishing opportunities. Hikers are welcome to explore the five different hiking trails offered here, including the Allegheny Trail.Â
This two-mile stretch winds through Peter's Mountain, a local range that runs the full length of the state before terminating at the Appalachian Trail. The network of trails offered by Moncove Lake State Park provide an excellent chance for nature watching as well, with species like beavers, whitetail deer, and turkey populating the landscape.Â
If you're bringing along your dog, they've got to be on a robust and sturdy leash throughout your visit. Doggie refuse bins are located at the trailheads, so make sure to clean up after your canine and keep these trails pristine for future guests. Moncove Lake offers 144 acres of coldwater fishing, offering largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, walleye, and yellow perch throughout the summer.Â
Make sure to grab a fishing license via the West Virginia State Park's website before packing up your rod and reel. Visitors are free to bring their dog along, as long as it's restrained. Overnighters can choose from any of the 48 tent and trailer campsites offered here. These all come standard with a fire pit, grilling surface, water hookups, and free firewood. Reservations can be made up to three months in advance during the summer months.Â
If you decide to bring along your dog, make sure they aren't disruptive to other guests. Bringing a dog to any public place requires planning, especially if your dog is excitable or aggressive. Make sure to consider this before taking them out, and come with all necessary items to have a safe and polite experience. A 6-foot leash is preferred for all canine guests.
