Description

Northern Highland American Legion State Forest was established in 1925 to protect the headwaters of the Wisconsin, Manitowish, and Flambeau rivers. The massive state park spreads over 232,000 acres in Northern Wisconsin and offers plenty of space for nearly every kind of outdoor recreational fun you can think of. Northern Highland American Legion State Forest has five nature trails, all between a mile and two-and-a-half miles long, which offer easy-going hiking opportunities.

There are seven other hiking trails and hundreds of miles of old logging roads, forest access roads, and more that provide great places to walk. Some trails are open for winter use, from snowshoeing to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Horseback riding is also permitted on many of the old roads, but horses are not permitted in any campground or on the marked trails.

The Northern Highland American Legion State Forest has over 900 lakes and 300 miles of rivers. Most people come to this sprawling forest for the water activities. Some lakes prohibit motorized boats. If you plan to fish, bring a current Wisconsin fishing license. Visitors looking to stay overnight can find a variety of campsites, from rustic to developed and equipped with electrical hookups.

Northern Highland American Legion State Forest’s website now has campsite availability and amenities listed. The Northern Highland American Legion State Forest is open during the winter for various winter activities. Many trails are groomed for skiing or snowmobiling. Please do not snowshoe or walk pets on groomed trails. Dogs are welcome at Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, but they must remain leashed.

Always pick up pet waste and be respectful of other park visitors and park rules. Northern Highland American Legion State Forest is open year-round. Admission to the forest requires a vehicle sticker, which starts at $8 for Wisconsin residents. If you’re looking for outdoor recreation in Northern Wisconsin, look no further than Northern Highland American Legion State Forest.
