Peter Detmold Dog Park

Peter Detmold Dog Park is a small public dog park located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, New York. The wooded dog park is considered to be one of the best-hidden gems of Midtown and it is a popular location for the neighborhood dog owners.

The off-leash dog run consists of a single, securely fenced, and double-gated area for dogs of all breeds and sizes to freely run around in. The area is L-shaped and lined with tall trees, paved with clean concrete paths, and it overlooks the East River and the Roosevelt Island. Even though the park is hidden away on East 51st Street, it is also right next to the FDR freeway so it can get very noisy, especially during rush hour.

There are several well-shaded benches within the leash-free area, great for owners who are watching their four-legged furballs explore and make friends in this cozy dog park. There is also a pedestrian overpass that goes over the park and provides great views of the East River and the dog run below. On top of that, there is a drinking fountain, dog poop bag dispensers and conveniently placed trash cans that enable owners to clean up after their dogs and maintain this park’s cleanliness.

In addition to the above, there are public restrooms, game tables, and a gazebo right outside of the dog run. The park is very well-maintained throughout the whole year which explains why it is so clean and well-equipped. The regular patrons are said to be very friendly and there is a dog Halloween costume party thrown every year that takes place at the dog park.

This conveniently located and safe dog park is a great place to take your pooch for some socialization and off-leash playtime. It is a good location to make new canine friends and get to know the community but keep in mind that it gets crowded on the weekends.
