San Francisco’s Lakeshore district features several naturally occurring lakes, including Pine Lake, a small body of water north of Lake Merced. At the shared border of Pine Lake Park and Stern’s Grove, there is a beautiful and fun off-leash dog play area managed by San Francisco Recreation and Parks. It is considered a local gem and is moderately populated most days.
Pine Lake Park itself is filled with wild birds, trees of all kinds, and open areas where you and your dog can run and play. The off-leash play area has plenty of benches, picnic tables, and even barbecue pits, making this the perfect area to visit for a picnic or extended day visit. There are just over three acres for you and your dog to run around in, and if you would like to put your dog on the leash and take him for a walk around the lake, you are completely welcome to do so. The dog play area is unfenced and well-maintained, with drinking fountains for both humans and dogs to utilize as needed.
Many regulars utilize this public park and the standards of training for dogs in this area is reputedly quite high. While many meet and receive advice from seasoned dog owners, some visitors report that the locals can be a bit forward when it comes to correcting dog behavior. The off-leash area is particularly good for running games like fetch, and the flat, grassy playing field is perfect for getting up to speed. The park provides poop bags at the entrance and requires you to pick up after your dog and do your part to keep the park clean and pleasant for all to use.
You and your dog will love walking through Pine Lake Park and taking in its natural surroundings. Come for the off-leash fun, set up a picnic date, cook on the barbecue pits, and enjoy passing the time with your dog and loved ones.
