In the beautiful Gold Beach, Oregon, the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint has nearly 450 acres of oceanfront room to enjoy with your family and furry companions. Explore the vast sand dunes and the river system and small ponds that attract all kinds of birds. The park is widely thought of as one of the most beautiful areas in Southern Oregon.Â
The park supposedly got its name from a soldier who lost his pistol in the river during the Rogue River Indian War, which occurred in March of 1856. The Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint is a perfect place to enjoy the beach and all that the beautiful Oregon Coast has to offer, including spots to a walk along the beach or on the trails, fishing, watching wildlife, and even windsurfing.Â
If you have a horse, you may enjoy riding along some of the equestrian trails. A trail map is available on the park's website. Campfires and open flames are currently banned in all Oregon state parks. Certain barbecues and grills are permitted, as long as they can be shut off by a valve. You may still enjoy grilling or cooking at the park, but use caution and do not leave cooking devices unattended.
Bring your dog to the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint and enjoy splashing in the water or walking the trails, as long as your dog is kept leashed. Be respectful of park rules and other guests. Bring waste bags and pick up pet waste. The Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint is open daily and is day-use only.Â
There are no fees for admission, and no reservations are needed. The Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint does not have any overnight camping available, but there are plenty of nearby options for camping or hotels.
