The Acalanes Ridge Trail is a 2.6-mile dirt loop that provides opportunities to see wildflowers, wildlife, and panoramic views of the area. Walk here with your pooch through the small greenway area with some stands of trees, a creek, and open meadows. This pathway is a part of the John Muir Land Trust.
You'll find a trailhead by taking Peaceful Lane in Lafayette to its end. There's a parking lot here where you can leave your car. Follow the short paved section that gives way to the natural-surface trail. The pathway heads into a creekside sylvan area with a wooden bridge crossing. From the creek, the route ascends to join a paved fire road for a spell. When you get back to the dirt trail, you'll start a final steeper climb to the ridge top. Rest and admire the scenery on the bench at the peak. Head back down to oak woods and a small canyon before emerging into the lower meadows on your way back to the car.
Fido is welcome to hike with you on this trail. They must be on a leash when you travel on the paved fire road. On other parts of the trail, you can let your pooch loose if they immediately respond to voice commands. Bring bags to remove any droppings. There's a lot of open land here, so carry refreshments with you when you visit.
