If you’re looking for a great place to take a fun walk with your pup, the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is perfect for you! This furrific trail is 3.5 miles in total, and it passes by lots of interesting sights. Pups are welcome on this trail on-leash.
The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail goes from one end of Anacostia Park to the other, and you can choose to begin your walk at either end of the trail. If you choose to begin in the northern end of the park, the first sights you’ll pass are a basketball court and a tennis ball court. After that, you’ll go by a playground. Then, you’ll walk underneath the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge, a historic bridge that’s been around since 1955.
After passing the bridge, you’ll go past a boat ramp, a playing field, and another basketball court. You’ll also go by a few more playgrounds, an outdoor fitness station, and a few playing fields. Then, you’ll pass a helicopter pad and a soccer field. After that, you’ll reach the southern end of the park at Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. If you’d like to continue your walk, you can walk across this bridge into the Navy Yard and Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
The entire trail hugs the Anacostia River, providing stunning water views as you’re walking. There are plenty of benches along the trail where you can take a break and enjoy these views. You may also get to see some of the native wildlife that lives in and around the river, including deer, songbirds, muskrats, turtles, ospreys, bald eagles, beavers, and ducks.
Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is a puptastic paved trail that provides great views of the Anacostia River and Downtown Washington, DC. Be sure to bring some doggy bags with you on your walk, and enjoy strolling down this pawesome path!
