Get ready to hike the day away with your fur-ever friend in the Essex, California, area! If your pup is whining to get out and stretch his paws, the Barber Peak Loop Trail is the place to be!Â
Located in the Mojave National Preserve, near the Nevada/California state line, this 6-mile loop is a great trail to hike if you both are wanting a stunning view of the desert. Pick up the trailhead at the Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center and be on your way to a pup-tastic day together. While this trail is rated as moderate, there is minimal elevation gain over its entire length, making it basically an easy hike for most pup-abilities!
You will be treated to views of the famous Hole-in-the-Wall attraction on the northern end of the trail, and sand dunes, sagebrush and other desert vegetation throughout. You will never get tired of photographing beautiful barrel cacti and other succulent plants along your hike. The natural dirt footpath can be a bit harsh and hot on the paws. The Banshee Canyon, and surrounding outcroppings and ridge-line views, add to the uniqueness of this hiking adventure.
Be sure to keep your pup on leash here as there are many thorns, and other natural hazards which could bother your pup. There is minimal shade along its entire length and therefore it is advised to only use the trail from October through April. During any season, please bring plenty of ways to cool your pup, and offer them many breaks. Sun protection is a must. You can access restrooms and drinking fountains to fill your water bottles at the trailhead’s information center.
What better way to see the desert than immersing yourself and Fido in a pawtastic hike at the Barber Peak Loop Trail in sunny California?
