As a part of the Inland Coast in the river delta of San Joaquin and San Francisco, Big Break Regional Shoreline Trail is a popular destination for hikers and bikers alike. This paved pathway is 8.7 miles long and offers pawesome wildlife viewing opportunities. You'll also see some pawtacular views of the northern California estuary. There are restrooms by the Visitors' Center at the Delta parking lot.Â
The trail starts at Big Break Road and follows the long driveway past the visitors' center parking lot. You'll continue behind a residential area until you reach the shoreline. Once you get near the water's edge, the pathway turns in a southeasterly direction and crosses a bridge. Hike with the water on your north and a neighborhood to the south. At some points, the route joins with local streets. Watch for shorebirds, raptors, and passerines in this tidal wetland area. Beavers, muskrats, and river otters also make their homes here.
Bring your furry pal with you, but keep them on the trail and secure them with a cord or leash when you come. Don't worry; you can still enjoy the natural beauty of the area from the pathway. Bring refreshments or fill your bottle at the rest areas, but don't use water from the river. Carry bags to remove your pup's waste.Â
Taking a hike along the Big Break Regional Shoreline is a pawtastic way to spend time with your special pal. On this route, you'll be passing through a Pacific Flyway. Spring and fall offer wonderful opportunities to view flocks of birds in their migrations to summer or winter habitats. This level path is a furrific place for you to get your exercise with Spot. You can also follow the trail past the discovery center to the fishing and observation pier to get your best views of the water.
