There's a pawmazing trail network at Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve that includes a loop system around the property. Depending on your time allowance and goals, you can combine the three main pathways to make a circuit or take an out-and-back trek on one or two of the routes. In spring, this area is lush green with some stunning wildflowers. Most of the passages here are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. There aren't any potable water sources or restrooms in the preserve.
To access the trail systems, park off Morgan Drive and start out on the Grey Fox Trail. This pathway heads west past some willows growing along the banks of a creek. You'll cross the water, go through a gate, and climb sharply upward through oak trees to a grassland area. Turn around at this point for an unhindered view of Mount Diablo.Â
As you continue onward, look for a sign that marks the junction with Stream View Trail. Follow Stream View to the right to take the loop around the property. This section descends through valley oaks and buckeyes until it reaches a level spot. After following along the stream for a stretch, the route turns and takes a steep uphill grade back to open meadows. Up here, the path ends at Red Hawk Trail. After a short, flat section, the trail rejoins Grey Fox, which descends back down to the junction with Stream View then back to your car.
Dogs are more than welcome to accompany you! Keep them on-leash when you're on the main trail or within 200 feet of the parking area. Carry disposal bags to collect any waste and bring water with you for your trek.
Take your pooch to Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve to hike in an undeveloped area. Admire the seasonal wildflowers and watch for red tail hawks soaring on the air currents in this peaceful retreat.
