There are so many places to enjoy the great outdoors in California that it may be hard to know which one to pick. Today, you should pack up your pawtastic pup and head to the Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest in Middletown, California. Recently reopened after fire damage, these trails are looking forward to visitor interaction once again!
Pick up the trailhead for the 14 miles of trails at the main entrance to the state forest. Here you will also have 22 miles of unimproved backcountry roads to hike at your disposal. No matter which trail or road you choose to begin your hike, you will not be disappointed while exploring these 3500 acres.
There is a mixture of scenic views throughout each hike. You and Fido will be treated to rolling terrain through open spaces and dense forests. Bordering each side of this forest to the north and the south are two mountains, so spectacular views are imminent! Volcanic rock dots the area from years of exposure, making some great off-trail climbing. The lower elevations offer scrub brush, but as you ascend, trees dominate the landscape. Natural hard-packed dirt footing is found on each trail floor.
Bicyclists share these trails, and equestrians are welcomed with a pre-paid permit. Your fur-ever friend will love these trails as they are mostly novice-oriented with a few challenging trails thrown in for fun! Restrooms are located at the main entrance, although the recent 2018 fire destroyed many of these. Therefore, plan accordingly until they can be rebuilt. Pack water and food for an all-day adventure.
The Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest is an ecologically-friendly location preserved in an effort to educate the public about how logging and recreation can be combined to work in harmony with each other. Your furrific friend will love spending some time here with his best friend.
