Looking for some serious pup-friendly hiking for you and your pawtastic pup to try? The Cannell Meadow Trail is the perfect spot! Located in Kernville, California, in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, this trail is designed with the adventurous in mind!
Beginning at Camp Owen, the trail winds for 22.7 miles and offers every adventure-lovers a mix of what they want. It is open to hikers, mountain bikers and motorcyclists. A portion of the trail holds the nickname of the Cannell Plunge in an area that drops considerably in elevation, perfect for thrill seekers! There is a terrain rating of difficult along its entire journey as it encompasses forests, rocks, steep climbs, and water crossings. The elevation gain and drop should be wisely considered, especially for pups.
If you and your fur-ever friend are in good fitness shape, you will have no trouble traversing this path, or at least part of it! Fido is allowed off leash throughout, although please keep an eye out for the other users of the trail for everyone’s safety. You will enjoy endless scenery here including wildlife, beautiful wildflower fields and shady trees.Â
The Lake Isabella Visitors Center is somewhat close to the trailhead, where restrooms are available. There are no facilities once you begin your hike, so be advised and plan accordingly. Also, be sure to pack plenty of water and food to share if you intend to hike for longer distances. Year-round access is permitted.
