Description

A must-do hike in the central western portion of California is the Contra Costa Canal Trail. This pup-friendly trail will offer you and your pup a great place to hike with lots of amenities.

Pick up the trailhead for the Contra Costa Canal Trail in either the cities of Martinez or Concord, California. These are the starting/endpoints of the trail. However, along this 13.8-mile trail, you will be able to access it from many other points as well, such as from within parks and the suburban areas of Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Concord.

This paved path will take you along the canal path, winding its way through the cities and rural locations of Contra Costa County. It is handicapped accessible for its entire length, and you will see joggers, moms out with the strolle,r and even horseback riders. You will be able to access 4 different parks as you stroll along, including Lime Ridge and Heather Stone Parks. Benches can be found along the path for a bit of a rest, and a people and pup-watching opportunity!

You will be treated to cityscapes and open spaces for a great mix of photographic opportunities. There are even cafes along the path with outdoor, pup-friendly seating to grab a snack or coffee. Because the path is paved, any pup-ability will be delighted to hike here and spend some quality time with you. Restrooms and drinking fountains are located within the individual parks and recreation departments. Clean up stations are scattered throughout the trail. Be sure to use these to keep this path pup-friendly.

When you are looking for an even longer excursion, make sure to take advantage of hopping on the various trails the Contra Costa Trail connects to, including the Iron Horse Trail and California State Riding and Hiking Trail.

Put the Contra Costa Canal Trail high on your pup-friendly bucket list today!
