Is your pup itching for an adventure? Then head over to Convict Lake for a gorgeous hike around a mountain lake. Don’t let your pup be deterred by the lake’s name; it actually comes from a Wild West shootout between a group of escaped convicts and their pursuers. The 1871 showdown happened at the lake, leaving it with a historic name and a storied past.
Access to the trail is found near the parking lot and next
to the boat launch. Since it is a loop, you can head out in either direction.
Let your pooch decide which way to go to start your journey. As your pal
follows the trail, they’ll see incredible jagged mountains and snowcapped
peaks. You can see Mt. Morrison that was named after a man killed in the notorious
shootout. While there isn’t much elevation gain on the hike, the lake sits at
nearly 8,000 feet, so you may feel the effects of high altitude. Benches are
strategically placed along the way so hikers can paws for a rest and soak in
the furrific views.
Convict Lake Trail is worth a visit any time of year. Of
course, during the summer, the blue lake and green forest is puptacular. When
autumn rolls around, the surrounding aspen trees glow bright yellow. And if
your pup wants to brave the freezing temperatures, the area is a breathtaking
in the winter. If you do come when the snow falls, be aware that the trail is
not maintained.
If your furry companion wants to stay the night, there
are a couple options. Convict Lake Resort has pet friendly cabins. It also has
a shop, marina, and restaurants. For a more primitive experience, grab a spot
at Convict Lake Campground. A nice day use area is located on the east side of
the lake. Here you will find picnic facilities and restrooms. No doubt about
it, your pup will go mutts over this pawsome trail!
