While the plans are to complete a 5.5-mile stretch from the Ambassador Bridge to Gabriel Richard Park near the MacArthur Bridge that connects Detroit to Belle Isle, so far, the Riverwalk runs for 3.5 miles in sections along both waterfronts. Even with a few breaks in the trail, hikers, bikers and dog-walkers alike have made this path a pupular Detroit attraction.
Starting at the Gabriel Richard Park near the MacArthur Bridge to the east, you'll see the lovely Belle Isle to the left, a large state park with 982-acres of pawsome wilderness and several recreational opportunities. There's a break in the trail that's still under construction, but you can pick up the Riverwalk again at Mt. Elliot Park, and take it all the way to the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre. Enjoy views of the river and Canada on the other side as you continue west past the Milliken State Park featuring a Lighthouse, Harbor and wetlands. If you like, you can jump on the Dequindre Cut Greenway here, a 2-mile trail that heads back into the city.
Next up on the Riverwalk, you'll see the Cullen Family Carousel in Cullen Plaza, and then a long stretch runs all the way to the Joe Louis Arena. A little further west, you can find another completed section inside the West Riverfront Park.
Along the way, you'll see even more parks, plazas, green spaces and urban landscapes than listed here, and new sections are currently being added, so keep an out for more pawrific places.
Whether you and your pup join an organized run, or just stroll on your own, you will both love the new terrain and amazing scenery along the way. Keep your dog leashed along the entire Riverwalk, and anywhere else in the city you may travel. Bring water to share with your thirsty pup, and clean-up bags to leave nothing behind.
Keep exploring with your adventure pooch and take a spin on the Detroit Riverwalk today!
