Description

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma is home to a system of trails known as Dog Run Hollow. These trails are well-groomed and have a path for every kind of hiker. When a trail has "dog" in its name, it's sure to be an excellent place to bring your pooch, and Dog Run Hollow is no exception! Your dog can accompany you along the trail as long as they remain on a leash and you clean up after them.

There are a few different paths totaling more than seven miles on this trail system, so depending on how long you feel like hiking, you've got options! The first two options you have on this trail are to complete a one or two-mile hike. Both hikes take you over gentle hills until you get a view of French Lake and nearby Elk Mountain. The longest trek you can make is over 7.5 miles, and in addition to views of French Lake, Elk Mountain, and West Cache Creek, you'll also get to see the Forty Foot Hole and Lost Lake.

The Forty Foot Hole is just what it sounds like, but it's even more beautiful in person! This large hole in the river creates cascading pools of water around it, and this is a popular place for people to stop and take a break. At Lost Lake, you'll find a peaceful and quiet lake where hikers like to stay for picnics as they take in their surroundings. This lake was built in 1915, and it's not only a nice place to hike to, but it's also a great fishing spot!

Be sure to carry lots of water and waste disposal supplies when you hike this trail. The Dog Run Hollow Trail is a moderately strenuous hike, but it has a little something for everyone. Whether you walk the whole thing or just a portion of the Dog Run Hollow trail system, you and your pup are sure to have a furrific time!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
