When you hike in California, you'll realize a lot of the trails you visit are rough, long paths that meander through forests and mountains. These hikes are fun, but if you're looking for a short trail that gives you just as good of views, you found the right place when you head to the Donnell Vista. The Donnell Vista features a paved overlook trail that loops around the cliff to give some extraordinary views of the valley down below.
When you come and visit the Donnell Vista, you and Fido will drive into a well-maintained parking lot, one that is paved and with amenities such as vault toilets, trash bins, and picnic tables. Be sure to bring your own water and clean up bags for the journey. The trail begins on the western end of the parking lot and the best part is that it is wheelchair accessible too.
The trail goes down a small switchback, which it turns sharply as it climbs down a small cliff. The views from this portion of the trail are nice, detailing a desert landscape with plants, trees, and grassy portions along the mountain slope. The trail continues its loop north, following desert and grass terrain until it comes to a fork along the northern peak of the trail. Heading left along the fork will bring you and Fido to an overlook.
The overlook offers the best views, with a clear view of the valley down below as Donnell Lake cuts through the mountains, creating jagged cliffs. After enjoying all the sights, head back to the fork and turn right to continue the loop, where it heads through a short shaded area before connecting back to the eastern part of the parking lot.
With a short hike, breathing taking views, and an even terrain to walk on, this trail gives you all you could want in a pawtastic hike. You and Fido will love the views and the time outside hiking, so don't hesitate to come back soon.
