French Ranch Open Space

French Ranch Open Space, located in Nicasio, California, consists of three hiking trails: Barnabe Mountain Fire Road, Top Flight Trail, and French Ranch Fire Road. No matter which trail you and Fido decide to take a hike on, the two of you are certain to enjoy yourselves!

The shortest trail in the park will take you and your pup about 40 minutes to hike, while the longest trail will take closer to an hour. These estimates don't include time for sight-seeing, though, and we're pawsitive you'll want to take some time to take in the awe-inspiring views the hike offers. The areas surrounding the trail are hilly, and during the summer, wildflowers seem to bloom everywhere you look. Make sure your phone is charged so that you can snap some pictures of your dog striking a pose. There are a few picnic shelters, so you can bring along a lunch if you plan to be out hiking for a while.

Some shade is provided along the trails, but it varies. Make sure you wear sunscreen and bring along plenty of water. If you're getting hot and thirsty, chances are that your four-legged friend is, too.

All three trails are dog-friendly, but they also allow mountain bikers and horseback riders, so if your dog is skittish, it might be a good idea to keep them close by. The leash you use should be no longer than six feet. Waste bags aren't provided for you to use, and there aren't any bins along the hike, either; we hope you don't mind holding on to any messes your dog might make!
