Description

Indian Joe Creek Trail is a short but welcoming trail through the beautiful wooded canyons and hills of central California. The trail is part of a larger park complex called Sunol Regional Wilderness. The wilderness spans nearly 7,000 acres, and within it, you can find ranchland formerly inhabited by Native American tribes. Cattle still roam the land as well under the protection of the land management policy of the East Bay Regional Park District, so you might catch a picturesque glimpse of them grazing in the fields, a view that captures the spirit of western California. While there are certainly many things to see in the region, one of the most appealing aspects of Indian Joe Creek Trail is that it welcomes furry friends!

You will definitely want to explore the whole trail with your dog. The trail is a loop trail, open year-round, that runs just over five miles with a relatively even grade. If you begin your hike in a counterclockwise direction around the trail, you will have access to more shade and an easier slope in the beginning. You will pass by some creeks and streams, and probably a few cows as well! There is also a small picnic area that can be a good place to sit down and rest your legs for a bit. Just note that there are no restrooms along Indian Joe Creek Trail, and you will need to bring water for you and your pooch since there are also no water fountains along the trail. Make sure to bring some cash to cover the parking fee.

While you are hiking, make sure to follow all of Sunol Regional Wilderness’s rules. Canine companions must remain leashed throughout their time there, and you’ll have to bring bags to clean up after your dog.

Indian Joe Creek Trail is truly a furrific location to get outside and explore nature with your dog, and you’ll be glad you chose to visit!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
