Maguire Peaks Loop Trail

Just outside the city of Sunol in west-central California lies Maguire Peaks Loop Trail. This trail is just over four miles, and it is a fantastic place where you can enjoy the fresh air and get away from the bustle of the city. This trail is not as frequently visited as some of the more popular trails in the greater Bay Area, so you will be able to relax and enjoy the tranquility of its natural setting while you are there. One of the best aspects of the trail is that your canine companion is welcome there!

You will have to head to Welch Creek Road to access the trail (note that you will have to purchase a $4 parking permit for the day). From there, you take Maguire Peak Trail about a mile until you reach Maguire Peak Loop Trail. Once you get to the loop trail, you will immediately notice the beautiful surroundings — lush, green rolling hills dotted with clusters of oak trees and a gentle breeze will greet you. You will also notice some picturesque wildflowers as you hike the trail with your furry friend. The loop continues on, and about halfway through the grade changes from uphill to downhill. From the loop trail, you can access Maguire Peaks if you’d like: there is a small, steeper trail that leads up to the peaks from the loop.

When you are visiting any trail, it is important to follow proper etiquette and safety practices. Maguire Peaks Loop Trail requires dogs to be leashed at all times, and also make sure to bring bags to clean up after your canine companion. Also note that there are no restrooms or water fountains along the trail.
