Have the dog days of summer been keeping you cooped up? Say goodbye to the sofa and head out to enjoy the salty air and cool ocean breezes on the Jean Lauer Trail! This 1.4-mile trail traverses the majestic landscape of Half Moon Bay along the rugged cliffs and beautiful grassy marshland. This trail is pawfect for any family because it is ADA accessible and features packed-dirt surfaces which are much easier on paws than pavement! There are two trailheads, but we suggest beginning at the one in Pillar Point Bluff Park because it offers convenient parking and restrooms. The path has a few trails that spur from it -- pay attention to the signage along your route to help keep your pack on track!
Your pups will be in awe of the diverse and dramatic landscapes along this paw path. The towering Santa Cruz mountains to the east are juxtaposed with the calm waters of Half Moon Bay below. Many species of waterfowl can be seen here, which is sure to delight your bird dog! Birds aren't the only fascinating thing keeping your pup's eyes to the skies! You are sure to see many planes coming and going to and from Half Moon Bay Airport.
Use caution when approaching the edges of the bluffs -- centuries of erosion from the elements have made the bluffs very weak and prone to crumbling. This trail is considered by many to have the best views on the Pacific Coast, so it is no surprise that it is very popular with locals. Consider planning your walk on a weekday morning to keep the crowds (and distractions) to a minimum.
The postcard-worthy scenery and relaxing atmosphere of this trail will have your pooches barking about it over the dinner bowl for weeks to come! The trails are open from dawn to dusk year-round, so come on out to see what all the local pooches are barking about!
