Next time your dog needs some exercise, pay a visit to Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail. Since the trail parallels the American River, it should be no surprise that it is also known around town as American River Trail. No matter what your pup want’s to call it, one thing is for sure, they’ll love trotting along this pawsome trail.
While there are several access points, the main trailhead
is inside Discovery Park. If you have time, check out this pawsome park before beginning
your walk. When your pup is ready to go, hop on the trail and start your
journey east. Your furry friend will
love getting in some doggy cardio while enjoying the views of the river. Since
the trail passes numerous parks, take a couple detours and let your pal check out
new territory. You’ll also find plenty of picnic benches along the way.  Most people don’t travel the trail in its
entirety. If you do, arrange for a pick up and drop off, or park a shuttle car
at the Beals Point.
This is a very pupular multi-use trail and many people
use it for commuting. Expect to see joggers, cyclists, equestrians, roller
bladers, and other dog walkers. Since it is quite busy there are some
expectations of trail users. Those
travelling on foot and paw are asked to use the left soft shoulder. Passing
should be done on the left and only after a verbal warning. Also, to help keep
the trail fresh and clean, pet waste bags are made available. Â
Restrooms are available at Discovery Park and the other
parks that the trail passes. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Riverside shrubs
create some shade on the trail, but it can get pretty warm during the summer. A
walk on this trail is sure to make your pup’s tail wag with delight!
