Description

Breathe in the fresh pine air as you and Fido take a leisurely stroll on the Junction and Breakwater Trail in southern Delaware! Part of the Cape Henlopen State Park, this pawpular trail is built on a section of the former Penn Central railroad and features crushed stone and paved surfaces, making it suitable for visitors of all abilities.

Spanning 5.8 miles between the coastal communities of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, the Junction and Breakwater Trail is accessible from various convenient locations. While not all access points offer parking, you'll find plenty of free parking at the trailhead behind the Tanger Outlet Center. This is also a good spot to grab a bite to eat before setting off on your journey!

As you and your adventurous pup make your way across this pine-studded rail trail, you'll find yourselves passing through dense hardwood and conifer forests and looking out onto wide cornfields. When you get to the Holland Glade and Wolfe Glade crossings, stop by the overlooks to catch puptacular views of coastal marshes. The former features an 80-foot railroad bridge that was originally built in 1913.

In addition to pawsome scenery, you and Fido will encounter lots of wildlife during your hike. Some of the critters that can be spotted include hawks, geese, deer, and squirrels. Interpretive signs dot the way to help you learn about the different plants and animals that live along the trail.

Junction and Breakwater is a well-traveled trail, so expect to share it with hikers, cyclists, runners, wheelchair users, families with strollers, and other people walking their dogs. Make sure you and your pooch are well-versed in trail petiquette, and don't forget the clean-up bags at home! For two-legged visitors, public restrooms are located at the Tanger Outlet Center and Wolfe Neck trailhead.

Scenic and easy, the Junction and Breakwater Trail is one of the best ways to see the natural beauty of Delaware!
