Description

For a trail that’s secluded yet close to town, look no further than the Kinnikinnick Fen Nature Preserve in Chillicothe. Situated along Kinnikinnick Creek, this 154-acre wetland complex features a 3.4-mile walking path, offering a serene environment where you and your canine companion can stretch your legs.

The Kinnikinnick Trail spans the entire preserve, meandering through scenic wetlands, sedge meadows, woods, wildflower fields, and native grasses. Because the area is fed by mineral-rich, alkaline spring water, it has also become home to several threatened plant and animal species in Ohio, including the Spotted Turtle and Kirtland’s Snake.

Not long after setting off on your walk, you and Fido will come across three observation decks overlooking the oxbow wetlands and Kinnikinnick Creek. Each deck is outfitted with a bench, so you can relax and take your time if you’re trying to catch a glimpse of wildlife. If you and your pooch are patient and quiet enough, you may see a muskrat paddling across the creek or hear the song of a swamp sparrow.

As you and your pup make your way along the Kinnikinnick Trail, you’ll find that it is covered in wood chips at the beginning, and then becomes grassy once you get to the prairie area. The entire path is generally flat and easy, and while it is not marked, you should have no trouble following it.

The Kinnikinnick Fen Nature Preserve is a no-frills site; other than the observation decks, there are no amenities along the trail. Be sure to bring your own doggy clean-up bags, which you can drop in the trash receptacles near the parking lot on your way out.

For a peaceful walk in nature with your pup, you can’t go wrong with the Kinnikinnick Fen Nature Preserve!
