The Maxine Lakin Nature Trail is a relatively easy hike with some short uphills, and welcomes people and pups of all fitness levels. Along the trail, you'll be able to enjoy some rugged, Arizona landscape sprinkled with colorful wildflowers and cacti. The best time to enjoy this hike is in the morning, before the sun is beating down and the crowds come.
The trailhead for the Maxine Lakin Nature Trail can be found at Mountain View Park. Here you'll find plenty of amenities, including free parking and restrooms. This relaxing park is a great rest spot for before or after your hike, with open grassy spaces, covered seating areas, and children's play equipment. The park is well known for it's beloved community garden.At the parking lot, you can unload your puppers from the car, and get ready to start your adventure. If you know where to look, you can even see the whole trail from the parking lot. The trail starts by heading northeast on a rocky jeep road, then skirts along the southwest side of North Mountain. There is a rocky uphill climb to the top that will likely get your heart pumping, but you'll be well rewarded with views! Aside from the pretty wildflowers and cacti along the way, there are great views of downtown and the surrounding areas from the top. Be prepared to see some creatures along the way, such as rabbits and a variety of birds.
Once you reach a saddle with a fork in the trail, turn right to continue the loop back to your car. If you turn left, you'll end up in the Sunland Heights neighborhood.
Dogs are more than welcome to join their humans on this trail, and you may even meet some other furry friends on your travels. Please keep in mind that pooches need to stay leashed and picked up after, so be sure to bring clean up bags.
