Mt. Woodson Trail

If you’re looking for a scenic and challenging hike to do with your pup, check out Mount Woodson Trail! This steep trail takes you up to the famous Potato Chip Rock. Along the way, you’ll get stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Poway. Dogs are welcome to join you on this pawsitively amazing trail on-leash.

Mount Woodson Trail is located within the Lake Poway Recreation Area, and parking is available in the recreation area. On weekends and holidays, the parking fee for non-residents is $10. During the week, parking here is free.

The trail begins right next to Lake Poway Recreation Area’s parking lot. The first part of the trail goes along Lake Poway, and you’ll get great views of the water. After that, you’ll start climbing up Mount Woodson itself. The trail is very steep and rocky, so be sure to take your time. If you or your pup need a break, there’s a picnic table about a mile from the trailhead where you can relax and have a snack or lunch.

As you continue along the trail, you’ll keep climbing up towards the summit. Along the way, you'll pass by huge boulders, and you'll also walk underneath boulders on some parts of the trail. After you’ve climbed about 2,000 feet, you’ll reach the end of the trail at Mount Woodson's summit. The summit is home to Potato Chip Rock, a thin rock that juts out over the edge of the mountain. Spend some time admiring the view here before you head back down to the start of the trail.

Mount Woodson Trail is a beautiful trail that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Be sure to bring some doggy bags with you so you can clean up after your dog, and have fun on this challenging trek with your pup!
